BATTLE OF THE LIQUID LIPSTICKS: KYLIE LIP KIT vs COLOR POP ULTRA MATTE
June 14, 2016
(Liquid) Lipstick battle. Get it? Like, Lip Sync Battle… But for liquid lipsticks… Without music… Or Chrissy Teigen busting moves in the background.
So, nothing like it really.
I’m just going to throw it out there that I think 2016 is THE YEAR of liquid lipsticks.
At IMATS in Sydney last year, which from memory was around September-October, I purposely bought a few liquid lipsticks (from Jeffree Star and Dose Of Color) because I literally had none at that point, and I just needed to get my hands on some to get the ball rolling. I couldn’t resist them any longer.
Fast forward to now, June 2016, and I have more liquid lipsticks than I’ll probably ever use in my lifetime BUT I LOVE THEM. You could call me a collector.
To save you from spending hours googling, searching YouTube (although really that’s a pretty damn enjoyable way to spend your time if you ask me) or whatever else you may do to get your beauty info, I thought I’d make it super easy for you and let the liquid lipsticks battle it out right here.
In this series, I’m going to be sharing with you what I love (or don’t love) about the liquid lipsticks I’ve tried. Everything you need to know is right here.
LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLEEEEEE!
KYLIE COSMETICS LIP KIT vs COLOUR POP ULTRA MATTE LIP.
We’ve all heard the rumours - that Kylie Cosmetics is made in the same factory as Colour Pop. Has this been confirmed yet? TBH, I have no idea! I’m inclined to think it’s true because I received an order from each brand within a week of each other and the invoices were both printed on purple paper. Co-inki-dink, much?
Do I care if they are made in the same factory? Not at all, but it’s an interesting fact.
KYLIE COSMETICS LIP KIT.
I’m the proud owner of 9 out of 10 Lip Kit shades, 3/3 Glosses and 2/3 Metals. Kylie Lip Kits come with a liquid lipstick and a matching lip liner.
Here are my thoughts on- Texture and consistency: I’ve found the texture to be a little inconsistent across the colour range.
This could be because I’ve purchased some products in her early releases, and some more recently and Kylie has said that she’s always looking to improve her formulas. It could also be an issue with the formula for certain colours - I’ve noticed that with certain nail polishes I use too.
I struggled most with Kourt K - the colour pay off was quite inconsistent meaning I had to apply multiple layers to get an even colour.
They’re VERY matte, which I love the look of- it’s very modern, but the formula is still comfortable to wear.
Application: Getting the perfect outline is EASY, particularly when you have a matching lip liner to help you out. The applicators have been improved in more recent times and I personally find them easy and comfortable to use.
Wear: The great thing about matte lipsticks is that they are long wearing and they just don’t budge. This is definitely true for Kylie Lip Kits. Although I’ve noticed the inner centre of my lips wearing off quicker than the rest, that only happens after wearing the lip kit for a couple of hours along with eating and drinking and not being careful with it at all. It stays perfect for hours!
The lip liner you get as part of the lip kit is so creamy and is the perfect addition to the liquid lipstick.
Colours: The Kylie Cosmetics Lip Kits have an awesome colour selection to choose from. There are 10 shades at this stage but I’m sure before long there will be even more. We’re talking nudes, pinks, red, burnt orange, chocolatey brown and black. Dead of Knight (the black shade) is the only one I don’t own.
Choosing colours online can be difficult but the colour swatches on different skin tones found on her Instagram @kyliecosmetics are amazing and a great point of reference to use before purchasing.
My top pick is ’22’. It suits so many skin tones and it opened me up to a whole new love of orange.
Packaging: I mean, have you seen it? It’s so boss.
Price: Kylie Lip Kits are priced at $29 USD which equals out to about $39 AUD. That seems like a decent price to me, particularly considering you get a lip liner to match your liquid lipstick!
Delivery: Delivery is available to Australia for $14.95 USD which is approx $20 AUD. Cheap? Not really. Do-able? Yes. The price is fixed too, so if you buy all of her products at once you’re still only paying $20 to get them all shipped.
It’s not the fastest shipping but if you’ve ever noticed the amount of orders being processed on her Snapchat, you’ll understand why. It has taken up to 2.5 weeks to get to me in Sydney at the maximum, a week was the fastest. You receive a tracking number so you can watch and await it’s arrival!
Customer Service: There was a little mistake with my last purchase - if you were watching me on Facebook Live at the time, you’ll know what I’m talking about. I was somewhat upset when I tried my latest lip kit ‘Exposed’ on to find that it was really an almost brown shade on me. I was expecting it to be the perfect nude. Turns out they had accidentally sent out Dolce K in the Exposed packaging along with the Exposed lip liner. I tweeted Kylie Cosmetics and emailed customer service and they replied within a few hours and said they would send out the correct order within 10 working days. I’ve heard some negative stories about their customer service but so far I’ve been very happy with how they handled the issue and I’ll keep you updated with the real Exposed when it arrives.
Any issues: I wouldn't suggest wearing them for a brief period of time. The long wear formula makes it difficult to remove easily from your lips once it’s set. The longer you wear it for, the easier it’ll come off. Also, try to remove with an oil based make up remover - this made the process much easier for me and also felt more gentle on my lips.
Tips: Do your best to only apply one layer. Too many layers equals a kind of ‘cakey’ feel.
Where to buy: KylieCosmetics.com The site will say 'sold out' until her next release which Kylie updates on her app each week.Keep track of when the products will be available to purchase and jump online as soon as they are because they can sell out pretty damn quickly.
COLOUR POP ULTRA MATTE LIP
I have 3 of these babies, with a few more on the way!
Texture and consistency: The best words to describe the Ultra Matte consistency is a thin liquid. It doesn’t feel thick on application but the colour is very opaque. Definitely a thinner consistency than the Kylie Lip Kit.
Application: I find this one very easy formula to work with.
It applies quickly with ease and the applicators are very comfortable on your lips.
Wear: This is one crazy comfortable formula to wear.
I completely forget that it’s on my lips. I have had a similar experience in terms of long wear as I do with Kylie Lip Kits. It doesn’t budge at all until a couple of hours into wear, and even when it starts to move it’s generally on the inner centre of my lips.
Colours: I’ve counted 47 shades in the Ultra Matte Lip. Almost any colour you could ever want, they’ve got it. My go-to is Midi which they describe as a ‘soft neutral beige’ but I would call it a ‘chalky pinky nude’.
There are also colour swatches on their website of the different shades on different skin tones so you have a guide for purchasing.
Packaging: It’s simple, but beautiful. My only problem is that after living in my handbag for a few days the packaging started to get a bit scratched up so it no longer looks fresh or new.
Price: $6 USD. That’s approx $8 AUD. This brings me to tears of joy.
Delivery: This is the only part that really bothers me. Delivery is calculated on how much you purchase (and where you live).
My first order came to $30.47 USD ($41 AUD) for 11 products BUT how likely is it that you would jump on their website and only buy ONE product when they’re as cheap as $6 each. Right?
If I had known that the shipping would go up, I may not have purchased so much in the first place. I calculated the shipping for just 1 liquid lipstick and it was $18.41USD (approx $24AUD). Unless it’s a heavy item, I don’t really like to pay more than $20 to get it here.
I think you can get a little carried away with how affordable the products are, and a little shocked when it’s time to calculate your shipping costs.
Customer Service: 4 days ago I placed my 2nd Colour Pop order and I haven’t received a shipping notification yet. The confirmation email I received notified me that usually they take 3-5 business days to process but due to huge demand they may take an additional 14 business days to process. I remember my first order back in March took a long time to arrive. I was surprised when I received it in the mail because I had forgotten all about it! I’ll just cross my fingers that it doesn’t actually take that long to get here again.
Any issues: I constantly struggle to load pages on their website. I’ve tried loading it on different browsers but it continues to be an issue for me. Occasionally they work, mostly they don’t.
Tips: I like to completely remove the product and reapply instead of doing touch ups when needed. I like to keep the matte formula looking as fresh as possible as they (generally) have a tendency to look dry after a while. Again, applying one layer is probably best but not as imperative as with the Kylie Lip Kits (in my experience).
