I changed my hair every day for a week. For fashion week, actually. #MBFWA2016
I've been told a few times now that I 'always look the same', which I don't think is that bad.. As long as I'm looking good! I thought I just had a signature look.
A few days before MBFWA started I thought changing my hair every day would be a fun/interesting experiment. I could be high maintenance for a week!
I called Richi (my 'MANE' man at Acadèmie Salon) and he thought it was a great idea, and one that he was happy to help make happen. I spent the following days searching through references, planning my outfits and my hair to go with them. To say they didn't all go to plan would be the honest truth (the fault of outfits not working out and time pressure) BUT I did manage different hair, every day for 5 days which I was totally happy with!
Here's how I did it:
DAY 1 MBFWA
Ombre pink hair with waves.
Time it took to achieve: No longer than 30 minutes.
Effort level: 7 out of 10. Easy once you've done it before, but can get a little messy during the application process.
I have a full tutorial on how I use eye shadow (or blush, or you could use a hair chalk) to temporarily colour my hair on my channel. You can check it out here.I also have a tutorial on how I style my hair into waves here.
The reason I tend to use make up powder products to colour my hair is purely because I have limited colours when it comes to hair chalk and when I get a vision - I'm sticking with it. Also, I find hair chalks stain my hair a little more. Sometimes I have to think outside the square, but it works.
DAY 2 MBFWA
My natural colour but longer and completely straight.
Time it took to achieve: 1.5 hours in the salon. There was a lot of talking during that time.
Effort level: Zero on my behalf, Richi did all the hard work!
I don't wear my hair straight very often. For some reason I just don't feel myself when I don't have waves. This style wasn't talked about in the same 'Wow, your hair!' kind of way, but I did receive numerous compliments and a couple of confused looks from my friends thinking 'Wait, wasn't your hair shorter than this yesterday?'
I took them out myself later that night. We applied them only using one side of the tape so they were easy to remove, although it would've been even easier if I had thought ahead and purchased something to help break down the glue on the tape. On the plus side, they're reusable because I didn't.
I highly recommend these tape extensions if you're wanting to mix up your look, they last up to 4-6 weeks if applied properly and they don't ruin your hair!
Day 3 MBFWA
Glittery tips in my natural hair, with waves.
Time it took to achieve: Around 30 minutes, but the clean up from the glitter took longer.
Effort level: Another 7 out of 10 here. Easy application, messy clean up.
I really didn't have the time to take a good photo of this hair unfortunately, BUT if you head to this video by Nat Roser at around the 3:58 mark you'll see it pretty well!
This was my lazy day.. I literally covered the ends of my hair in Fudge Membrane Gas which is a crazy hold hair spray and then dunked my hair into a pot of loose gold glitter by Make Up Store.
I shook it off a little before cleaning up the mess I made in my boyfriend's bathroom and then rushing out the door to get backstage at the Manning Cartell show.
If I would've planned this one earlier I probably would have looked for a glitter hairspray or used a product that was a little stickier, but in the end it worked and lots of people noticed the glitter party that was taking place on the ends of my hair.
Day 4 MBFWA
Dark grey hair.
Time it took to achieve: Approx 15 minutes in salon.
Effort level: Another zero on my behalf - thanks Richi!
I've been wanting to try grey hair for such a long time now, this just had to be my time to do it!
I thought the process would've been much more time consuming and more damaging on my hair, but Richi mixed up some kind of grey toning concoction and applied it and washed it out in less than probably 15 minutes.Impressive!
My hair looked completely different, it was much darker then I've ever had it but it was really fun to look so unlike my usual self. I thought it went particularly well with my dark, rock n roll outfit vibes that afternoon.
Again, I wore it wavy -maybe I didn't mix things up as much as I thought I had - but my colour was seriously different. I loved it! I felt like a new version of myself. Even some of my good friends had to do a double take, they didn't recognize me! ha!
Day 5 MBFWA
Silvery grey hair.
Time it took to achieve: Less than an hour.
Effort level: 3 out of 10. I've got the whole wash, dry, curl and flip routine pretty down pat.
After I went grey I wasn't entirely sure where to go from there to make my hair look any different. I remembered Richi had said it would only last a few washes so I figured if I washed it, the colour would probably change to a slightly lighter, more silvery shade - and it did!
My hair changed into a completely different shade and again, I loved it. I was receiving more and more compliments. I was onto a winner!
I kept my signature wave but flipped my hair and changed my parting to add some serious volume.
All in all I thoroughly enjoyed mixing my look up for the week. It was a decent amount of effort but having Richi help me out made a huge difference. The hardest thing I had to do on those days was get out of bed! #can'tcomplain
If I was Kylie Jenner I would've had wildly different wigs applied by my hairstylist every morning but for obvious reasons (for example: me not being KJ) that just wasn't going to happen and I think I did pretty well with only a couple of days to plan it. I definitely broke out of the box.. So to speak.
